The world is currently in the midst of a global recession, and permanent employment is harder to come by than ever. Fortunately, many people with particular skills have the opportunity to work as a freelancer. Companies like working with reliable freelancers because it is cheaper than taking on permanent staff. However, starting out as a freelancer is fraught with difficulty, and it should not be undertaken lightly.
A freelancer has no rota, and no 9-5 schedule to keep. This is ideal for people with busy social lives or young families. There is also no boss to answer to, and that can mean more freedom to be expressive and to take a business into a direction the person feels comfortable with. For many, the chance to simply roll out of bed and start working is too tempting to resist – and some people actually work in bed! Life as a freelancer is all about freedom and choice. People who are tied to a certain way and schedule of work simply don’t have the freedom to plan every moment of their lives. Freelancers are the masters of their own destiny, and they can determine the exact course of their career.
The main drawback to becoming a freelancer is the lack of a regular salary. Working for a company may be restrictive, but it gives workers the luxury of knowing exactly how much they will receive at the end of the month. Freelancers have no such luxury, and they often don’t know how much they are going to earn from one day to the next. A freelancer is also responsible for completing a job alone, as there are no colleagues to enlist help from. This can lead to some very long nights spent at the computer. Being a freelancer is just like running a small business, and it will be necessary to buy office supplies online at some point. However, the decision to buy office supplies online is just one of many that will likely entail a significant investment that comes out of the freelancer’s own pocket.
The decision on whether or not to become a freelancer very much depends on the individual. For some, it is the perfect way to earn a living; for others, the uncertainty and stress involved is simply to much to bear!
