Romantic Holiday Destinations in Europe

Romantic Holiday Destinations in Europe. Romance can be kindled almost anywhere but undoubtedly there are some places which are more conducive. In Europe there are the usual suspects, such as Paris and Venice, but less obvious destinations can also provide some welcome romance.

Popular Romantic City Breaks

For good reason the French capital is a popular choice for a romantic escape. Shun the usual tourist hotspots though and instead find inspiration from artistic and literary Paris. Escape the streets with a stroll on the 10 metre high Promenade Plantée, a former railway viaduct which featured in the film Before Sunset. Follow in the footsteps of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir and have coffee (or stronger) at art deco gem Café de Flore. Walk the left bank of the Seine and browse the shelves of the delightful Shakespeare and Company bookstore.

The spectacular Italian city of Venice oozes romance, particularly if you visit off season to avoid the crowds. It is easy to get intentionally lost in the many alleyway and canals away from the major thoroughfares. Then take a vaporetti to the stunning islands of Burano or Torcello in the Venetian Lagoon.

Alternative Romantic Destinations

For love in a cold climate, head to Bergen. It may seem an unorthodox choice, but this compact Norwegian city is the gateway to the romantic fjords and has a relaxed vibe which makes it a special place. Take the funicular up Mount Fløyen for heart fluttering views and then return to earth to explore the pretty historical waterfront. If it gets too cold cuddle up in one of the many seafront cafes and share a skillingsboller (cinnamon bun).

Emily Brontë’s gothic masterpiece Wuthering Height is arguably the most romantic novel in the English language. So what better place for a romantic break than the place which inspired it? The Bronte parsonage (now a museum) is located in the historical Yorkshire village of Howarth. Arrive by steam locomotive (Keighley and Worth Valley Railway) and then hike up the path from the parsonage to the ruins of Top Withens. It is guaranteed to be a wild and romantic journey.
